This is very unorthodox (when compared to painting techniques of the past) because oil portraits are usually done on canvas or wood panel and any sketching is done with vine charcoal. Paint becomes more transparent in time and pencils lines will eventually be seen through a painting as it ages. The vine charcoal will blend with oil paint but pencil will not. When an artist glazes, he or she adds transparent color to a painting, to give the work a more realistic look.

<span style=`color: #ffffff;`><span style=`font-size: large;`>HOW do you make your oil paint transparent?

There are two ways:

1.) Add painting medium- Any paint will become more transparent if it is mixed with painting medium (I mix in A LOT of painting medium to the paint when I glaze). I feel that the best painting medium is Liquin. (See Figure 1)

2.) Use paint that is transparent or translucent- Look at the label on the tube of paint to find out about the paints properties. Most paint companies, put a marker on the outside of their tubes to let a customer know about the properties of the paint. An empty box means that the color is transparent, a half filled box means that the paint is translucent. For any beginner who wishes to try glazing, use paints that are transparent to translucent. (See Figure 2)

<img title=`Liquin Original` src=`https://photos-g.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-ash1/hs293.ash1/22078_1255409118214_1619167147_30603410_1539271_n.jpg` alt=`Liquin` width=`438` height=`245` /> (Figure 1)

<img title=`Oil Paint Properties ` src=`https://photos-b.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-ash1/hs293.ash1/22078_1255410998261_1619167147_30603415_1845277_n.jpg` alt=`Transparent or Translucent or Opaque` width=`434` height=`243` />

(Figure 2) The empty box means that the paint is transparent (AKA a good color for glazing)

Here is a list of transparent paints for each of the colors of the spectrum (plus black, white and brown). (Figure 3)
  <p style=`text-align: center;`><img title=`Transparent oil paint colors` src=`https://photos-d.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-ash1/hs293.ash1/22078_1255409078213_1619167147_30603409_5070569_n.jpg` alt=`List of Transparent Oil Paint Colors` width=`427` height=`604` />

<span style=`font-size: large;`>Now that you know how to make your paints transparent......How do you glaze?

Here are some things to keep in mind!

1.) Wait for the previous layer to completely dry.

2.) Use soft tipped brushes- Traditionally, Sable brushes are the softest. There are also synthetic brushes that are similar in softness to Sable. (Figure 4)

3.) Buy a Fan Brush- Fan brushes look gimmicky but they are SO HELPFUL! They do not hold much paint, and that is a good thing when you blend. A fan brush can help you `softly` manipulate paint. (Figure 5)

4.) Use multiple brushes- Apply with one brush- Move the paint around with another unused or thoroughly cleaned brush. (The video will do a good job of demonstrating this)

5.) Wipe your brush to clean it rather than dip it in mineral spirits. The mineral spirits can ruin glaze layers! Keep it AWAY in this step!

6.) Keep a paper towel close- Since you are working atop a dry layer; if you make a mistake, just wipe it off with a paper towel!

<img title=`paintbrushes` src=`https://photos-e.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-ash1/hs293.ash1/22078_1255409518224_1619167147_30603413_8140725_n.jpg` alt=`Soft tipped paint brushes` width=`514` height=`288` />

(Figure 4)

<img title=`fan brushes` src=`https://hphotos-snc3.fbcdn.net/hs213.snc3/22078_1255409198216_1619167147_30603412_2464200_n.jpg` alt=`fan brushes sable` width=`527` height=`295` />(figure 5)

The colors that I used to glaze (the dog) were, Ultramarine Blue, Ultramatine Purple, Italian Brown Pink Lake and Davy`s Grey from Old Holland Classic Oil Colors, Asphaltum Black from Mussini Oil Colors Chromatic Black from Gamblin Oil Colors and Zinc White from Vasari Oil Colors.

<span style=`font-size: large;`>Download the PDF version of this Lesson: CLICK HERE

<span style=`font-size: large;`>Buy the Products that I use:
     <table style=`width: 600px;` border=`0` cellspacing=`0` cellpadding=`5`>

<img src=`https://www.dick-blick.com/items/004/45/00445-1003-1-2ww-m.jpg` border=`0` alt=`Liquin Original` />

<span style=`font-size: medium;`>Liquin Original

<span style=`font-size: x-small;`>This reliable favorite (formerly known simply as `Liquin`) is a general-purpose low gloss medium that improves flow and transparency. The company is known for uncompromising adherance to traditional techniques and standards. All color making is done by hand, and all processes are controlled by artists. Pigments are ground in stone rather than metal rollers, and colors are packaged in lead tubes rather than the more modern aluminum alloy tubes, which eventually oxidize and decay. Old Holland Oils are produced according to traditional recipes, those used for paintings made in the 17th century. These paintings retain the clarity of their colors to this day. That`s durability. Like hundreds of years ago, only the best pigments and binders are used to produce very concentrated and light-fast paint, resulting in higher color strength, hiding power, and intensity. That goes for all 168 colors listed here. Only cold-pressed linseed oil from the first pressing is used for the binder. This optimizes oxidation (drying) of the paint and also promotes permanence. Varying amounts of damar resin are then added to ensure that all colors dry at the same time. This guarantees tension-free and durable color layers. He has constructed a paint of exceptional durability in a color palette that is proof of his devotion to painter`s real concerns. All colors are mixed and packed by a dedicated crew of 20 employees in their sun-drenched (at least when we visited) factory in Southeast Portland. Robert`s concern with the longevity of oil paint has led him to national recognition and extensive collaboration with groups such as the National Gallery in Washington, DC. Recently, Gamblin was commissioned to formulate a custom gold finish that was applied to the entire ceiling of the newly rehabilitated Radio City Music Hall in New York City. I made this video for beginner to intermediate level artists, who wish to learn about traditional painting...I will try to show you how to paint. step by step. While I can imagine that painting a realistic looking puppy is intimidating for someone new to art, I will try to make my instruction as clear as possible, so that you can get in to great habits for the future. Once you are in good habits, you will progress very quickly. I split this lesson in to four parts. 1.) Part one will cover what you need to know before you paint. 2.) Part two will give you an effective strategy for painting realistically The mentality of rendering (aka drawing what you see) 3.) Part three will walk you through the process of painting and I will give you tips while I paint. The process of `sculpting` a painting 4.) Part four will actually be a separate video and it will discuss glazing...a great finishing strategy. Glazing: Finishing a painting (Covered in another video) Part 1.) I have two points to go over in Part 1- 1-1- First, pick a surface to work on. When I was learning painting, I would use cardboard in place of canvas to save money. Ten years later my original oil paintings are still in good shape. However, this would not be the case if I didn`t prime the cardboard with layers of Gesso. Without getting over technical, gesso gives your surface a protective layer that will prevent the oil from being over absorbed. Try to remember this silly saying, `Paint with cream, not with butter or milk!` No, im not saying that you should break out the dairy prodicts.....I am referring to the consistency of the paint. Cream is not a solid like butter .....and is not watery like milk. When you apply paint to a surface it should be creamy in texture. You can make the paint creamy by adding about three to four drops of painting medium to the paint that is sitting on your palette. The object in my hand right now is called a palette knife. I used it to mix the paint with the painting medium. For a long time, I considered this step trivial, but it makes a difference! 1-2 Oil Painters use mineral spirits to clean off their brushes and to thin out a paint mixture. Mineral Spirits is also known commercially as paint thinner and sold as an art supply called turpenoid for quadruple the price. You will only need a SMALL amount of Mineral Spirits because its very powerful. Use it sparingly when you wish to thin out your paint; because too much will make the paint runny and `milk-like` in consistency. Here is a great tip to remember when cleaning your brushes.....WIPE-DIP-WIPE. As silly as that sounds, commit it to memory....In other words..... wipe your brush with a paper towel.....Then dip it in to the mineral spirits and swish it around....followed by another wipe with the paper towel to take the extra spirits off your brush. The last wipe is especially important to prevent the excess mineral spirits from thinning out your paint too much Part 2 Now you will learn a great strategy to help you paint what you see. I call this strategy, `jigsaw puzzle observation` because it is similar to putting a jigsaw puzzle together. Jigsaw puzzles are fun because you fit shapes together to create an image.........I want you to think the same way when you paint. Try to see and identify shapes and then put them together like a puzzle. Painters sculpt and manipulate the paint on the surface of a painting until the shapes fit together as a recognizable image. Here....let me show you what I mean.....When you try this, I recommend that you get in the habit of looking at your reference image at least once for every five seconds; and then paint what you observed. After you get the bigger shapes in.....work your way down to the smaller shapes........ If you feel that you cant work the paint any more. Let it dry and repeat this step on top of the dried paint. You have an advantage by using paint because it is opaque and it can cover over any mistake...... Take your time with this step. Skyscrapers cant be erected without solid supports and good paintings cannot be made without careful placement. Both of my grandparents, Merrill and Esther Siefert died the following year. I painted them from observation and it gave me a good chance to spend time with them before they died. (There is a lot of SILLY stuff on merrillk.com....but this is my more serious side). When I decided to pursue art, they gave me their full support, while other people (understandably) laughed at me. This piece also solidified my love for painting. I was competent at painting before I was competent at drawing. Painting catered to my `need` to edit my mistakes and it allowed my DEFIANT and PERSISTENT side to `come out` (which I got from my grandmother:). Studying painting gave me a good base of knowledge on the properties of artistic materials, since it is such a versatile media. I built upon this knowledge in my later artworks. In 2009, after heavily experimenting with ALMOST EVERYTHING (art supplies....not drugs:), I realized that paint is unequaled in surface beauty and I began to finish my artworks with layers of paint. Glazing is pure magic 3.) Knowing how to glaze will take your painting abilities to the next level.

<span style=`font-size: medium;`>This tutorial will demonstrate: 1.)Why glazing is an important painting strategy 2.) (We will touch a little bit on) The science of refracted light 3.) Which paints to use. (How can you tell if a paint is a glazing color?) 4.) Which brushes to use for glazing 5.) How to do it! (The technique of glazing oil paint) Glaze layers happen at the final stages of a painting, so lets take you to the end of the painting that you just saw right now. I am going to keep things concise and to the point. Give me your full attention for the next few minutes and you will acquire a solid understanding of glazing. 1- Why is glazing an important painting strategy? Think about the last time that you had a sunburn. When sunburns heal, a layer of skin usually peels off your body. Take a second to remember what that skin looks like. The peel of skin is very thin, smooth and it is possible to see light through it. Our outermost layers of skin, the epidermis, is comprised of multiple layers of skin similar to the peeled layer of skin that you just imagined. Glazing, the application of multiple, thin, transparent to translucent layers, is like the epidermis of a painting and it is important for an artist to know how to glaze so that he or she can get a more life like effect to their work. 2- The Science of Refracted Light Light refracts through the transparent and translucent layers of a painting. In other words, it penetrates these layers and picks up any color that these layers contain. A good analogy for this concept is a seashell on the beach. Think of how the color of a seashell seems to change when it is covered with ocean water. The shell seems to change color, but in actuality, all physical characteristics of the shell remain the same. The sunlight refracting through the water alters the shells appearance just as glaze layers affect the final appearance of a painting. 3- Which paints to use Paint colors have different characteristics. For instance, red, is not just red when it comes to painting. Cadmium red, the color on the left, is extremely opaque and has a great covering power. The color on the right, alizarin crimson is extremely transparent with a lesser covering power. Notice how you can see the blue line through the alizarin crimson, but not the cadmium red. Most paint companies label the outside of their paint tubes to communicate these differences. Usually a box or circle is used to say if a paint is transparent, translucent or opaque. A filled box or circle is a symbol stating that a color is opaque while the opposite is true if a paint is transparent. When you glaze, you would add painting medium such as liquin to the paint. It is easy to glaze with transparent colors such as alizarin crimson but it is also possible to glaze with the cadmium red. In order to glaze with an opaque color, use a little bit of paint and a lot of painting medium. I would advise any beginner or novice painter to stick with transparent and translucent paints.

<img title=`list of glazing colors for oil paint` src=`https://photos-d.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-ash1/hs293.ash1/22078_1255409078213_1619167147_30603409_5070569_n.jpg` alt=`list of glazing colors for oil paint` width=`427` height=`604` />

4.) Which brushes to use When you glaze, have multiple soft tipped brushes within reach. A variety of sizes and shapes including round tip and fan brushes are ideal. Now we are ready for the demonstration I did the glazing in three sittings over 21 days. It is important to let the paint thoroughly dry between glazes. If it doesnt, you will start picing up some of the previous layer. Notice that I am starting off by using two brushes. One to apply paint and the other to move the paint around. This is called dry brush technique and it is your most important glazing strategy. Dry brush gives you a smooth untextured finish...... I wouldnt recommend this for anyone trying glazing for the first time, but I am actually using titanium white when I create a highlight.....that is a white with extreme covering power....equal to what you saw with cadmium red. I use that only in the brighter highlight areas and when I use it, I use a ton of painting medium with it. ........ The shadows get a little tricky, I try to look at my reference photo to match the shape but I am very aware of their edges as well. If there is a soft edge, I soften it with another dry brush....This is VERY IMPORTANT....Do not clean your brush in mineral spirits or turpenoid. Instead, just wipe your brush on a paper towel because those paint thinners will dissolve the entire glaze.....If a brush becomes unworkable, put it aside and use another soft tipped brush.
How to Draw / Paint Derek Jeter.

<span style=`font-size: large;`>CLICK HERE then scroll down scroll down to download the documents

    <table style=`width: 600px;` border=`0` cellspacing=`0` cellpadding=`5`>

<img src=`https://www.dick-blick.com/items/015/86/01586-2109-2ww-m.jpg` border=`0` alt=`Kevin Macpherson Oil Color & Medium Set` />

<span style=`font-size: medium;`>Kevin Macpherson Oil Color & Medium Set

<span style=`font-size: x-small;`>Painter Kevin Macpherson has selected a unique array of nine colors and mediums, as well as instructional items to give artists a peek into his landscape painting techniques.
